Sample Status Report

The Status Reports Chapter shows you how you can modify the format of the real-time status reports generated by the VolanoChat server. One useful format is to use comma separated values, allowing the entire log file to be imported into a spreadsheet program.

The chart below was created by importing into Microsoft Excel the 1440 status reports (taken every 60 seconds) on 03 June 1998 for our demonstration VolanoChat server. The four values charted are:

• number of connections,
• percentage of heap memory in use,
• average number of messages sent per second, and
• average number of messages received per second.

The samples in the chart start at 12:00 midnight and continue for 24 hours. You can see the sawtooth pattern of the Java garbage collector at work in the heap usage graph. Throughout the busiest part of the day, the VolanoChat server's CPU usage remained at roughly two to three percent of a 200-MHz Intel Pentium Pro processor.
