Known Problems

You can report any problems you're having with VolanoChat by sending a complete description along with your VolanoChat server support.log file to support@volano.com. Below are some of the problems of which we are already aware.

Netscape 6 on the Mac doesn't work.
Netscape 6 on the Mac fails to run the VolanoChat, MyVolanoChat, and WebVolanoChat applets. The applets run fine with Netscape 6 on Windows as well as Netscape 4.76 on the Mac and Microsoft Internet Explorer on the Mac.

Key ignoring fails with Netscape on the Mac.
The key.ignore.meta property, used by default to prevent the use of the Command-V paste keyboard shortcut on the Mac, still accepts the pasted text if the visitor hits the Enter key. The key ignoring works with Internet Explorer on the Mac. There is no way to work around the problem on Netscape.

Web Touring does not work in the WebVolanoChat applet.
The WebVolanoChat applet does not recognize the applet property webtouring.default=true.

Keyboard does not work on the Mac.
When using the Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) Version 2.2 with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 on the Mac, the keyboard may become disabled when trying to input text into the VolanoChat or MyVolanoChat applets. The WebVolanoChat applet does not experience the problem. You can work around the problem by closing the applet windows and launching it again with the VolanoChat button. Your keyboard should then work just fine on the second launch of the applet. You can avoid the problem by upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.1 for Mac OS versions 8.1 through 9.2. You can download Internet Explorer 5.1 for the Mac from Microsoft's Web site.

VolanoChat applet hangs when maximizing the window with Internet Explorer.
The Microsoft virtual machine in some versions of Internet Explorer for Windows sometimes hangs when the VolanoChat applet windows are maximized. The problem no longer occurs with the latest Microsoft virtual machine. You can upgrade to the latest version by going to the Windows Update Web site with Internet Explorer, or by clicking the Windows Update menu item under the Tools menu in Internet Explorer for Windows. From that page you can select and download the latest Microsoft virtual machine.

exception: java.lang.NullPointerException
Internet Explorer displays this message in the browser status area if any of the VolanoChat applet true or false properties are left undefined in its properties file. To work around the problem, make sure all of the following properties are included in the properties file you have defined for the applet:
override.myvolanochat=true
history.enable=false
member.editable.name=true
member.editable.profile=true
alert.entrance.default=false
alert.audio.default=false
alert.count.default=false
webtouring.default=false
image.button.border=true
page.newwindow=false
page.use.document.base=false
You can define the values differently than their defaults shown above, but each property must be found in the file. This problem was fixed in VolanoChat Version 2.1.7.

Applet COM.volano.VolanoChat can't start: ERROR
Netscape Communicator displays this message in the browser status area for the same problem documented above.
